Guidelines on burning wood
Not everyone accepts the importance of carbon controls, and this is a point which still attracts controversy, especially from those with the most money invested in fossil fuels. However, even if we discount the potential climate costs of carbon, there are other reasons to switch from fossil fuels to firewood.
Firewood is renewable. While there may be some debate about the time frame, there is no doubt that sooner or later there will be no more fossil fuel, although there are a wide range of alternatives, none of these have the required infrastructure to take over from fossil fuels as easily as firewood. Although you can heat your home using electricity, there are technical issues in providing enough electricity to replace natural gas and oil for all of the homes which currently rely on them. And anyone who currently using electrical means of heating their home will tell you how much more expensive it is to run than gas, especially during the winter.
This brings us nicely to the subject of costs. Fossil fuels have been big business across the world and there is a huge amount of effort put into getting these products out of the ground. This means that fossil fuels are quite cheap, however they are subject to fluctuating prices. Something you will see on the news each morning when they announce the current price of oil, or everytime you fill up the car and the price at the pumps has gone up again.
Fire wood is plentiful and has been at a steady price for years. In fact this price is likely to remain steady for the foreseeable future. |
